Large anticlines lie seaward of and trend parallel to the fault. The Queen Charlotte fault marks the boundary between two tectonic plates: the Pacific Plate to the southwest, and the North American Plate to the northeast. Since the last revisions to the map for Alaska in 2007, scientists have made significant advances in understanding active faulting, fault slip rates, and fault behavior. [29], The 2012 magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the western coast of Haida Gwaii at around 8:10pm Pacific Time on Saturday 27 October. Below are data and web tools related to this project. The Chirikof system arises near Cross Sound and ends in turbidite fans south of the Kodiak-Bowie Seamount chain, a relic Chirikov channel that once carried sediment westward to the Aleutian Trench. While the San Andreas fault is continental fault, both display similar faulting system. Share sensitive information only on official, secure websites. In this case, Queen Charlottes fault carries the strain to the Cascadia subduction zone below it and the Alaska subduction zone above it. The earthquake was felt at Jasper, over six hundred miles away. The primary goal of the study was to gain a better understanding of the earthquake, tsunami, and underwater-landslide hazards throughout southeastern Alaska, as well as gather data to devel, 12201 Sunrise Valley Drive Reston, VA 20192, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center, Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG), Region 2: South Atlantic-Gulf (Includes Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands), Region 12: Pacific Islands (American Samoa, Hawaii, Guam, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands), Coastal and Marine Hazards and Resources Program, began mapping the fault in detail in 2015, Fairweather fault, the terrestrial portion of this tectonic system, EXPRESS (Expanding Pacific Research and Exploration of Submerged Systems), Earthquake Hazards in Southeastern Alaska, Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center, EXPRESS: Expanding Pacific Research and Exploration of Submerged Systems, Core Preparation and Analysis Laboratory and Sample Repositories, Characterizing the Active Queen Charlotte-Fairweather Fault System, Coastal and Marine Hazards and Resources Program News, Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center News, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center News. Since then, three different research vessels have collected more than 16,000 square kilometers of new high-resolution multibeam sonar on both the U.S. and Canadian portions of the fault, in depths ranging from 0 to 2,271 meters. J. Sophia Charlotte, born on May 19, 1744, was the eighth child of Charles Louis Frederick, the Prince of Mirow, Germany, and his wife, Elisabeth Albertina. Brown and W.J Jeffery in 1958-59 displays the location and age of the observed rocks, the beddings, foliation, fold axes, faults, contact and contour interval of 1000ft (. Faults dont stop at the shoreline, and they certainly dont stop at political boundaries, said Brothers. A transform fault is a horizontal motion that occurs when two plates are forced to move along each other (see figure 2). United States, Mapping the Entire Queen Charlotte-Fairweather Fault System. San Andreas, Alpine) in terms of slip rates and seismogenic potential. Ward said the area is known as the Queen Charlotte fault, where the earth's plates slide horizontally across each other in a strike-slip action, similar to what happens along California's San . [5] There are various mechanisms proposed to accommodate oblique convergence along the QCF, this include underthrusting and strain partitioning,[2] crustal thickening,[10] and distributed shear. Video Software we use: https://amzn.to/2KpdCQFAd-free videos. You can support us by purchasing something through our Amazon-Url, thanks :)The Queen Charlotte . In 2017, the U.S. Geological Survey, Geological Survey of Canada (Natural Resources Canada), Sitka Sound Science Center, and the Universityof Calgary joined forces to examine the entire length of this poorly understood fault. The Queen Charlotte basin is considered to be one of the most prospective areas for significant hydrocarbon resources along the northeast Pacific margin. Of these, 84 lie on or close to the Queen Charlotte Fault, most within the rupture zone of the great 1949 earthquake (MS = 8.1). Gustavus United States, 384 Woods Hole Rd. GLORIA mosaic of the Gulf of Alaska and the British Columbia margin: Deep-sea channels, margin deformation, and the Queen Charlotte fault, Sedimentary depositional environments in the Gulf of Alaska from GLORIA Imagery, Microearthquake survey in northwest British Columbia and southeast Alaska, Recent acoustic studies of western Canadian continental margin, The geology and petroleum potential of the Queen Charlotte Basin, Pacific Continental Margin, Canada, Univ. The Queen Charlotte Fault forms a triple junction south with the Cascadia subduction zone and the Explorer Ridge (the Queen Charlotte Triple Junction). To the south, the San Andreas blends into a series of faults, like the San Jacinto Fault, and it . The primary goal of the study was to gain a better understanding of the earthquake, tsunami, and underwater-landslide hazards throughout southeastern Alaska, as well as gather data to devel, Active traces of the southern Fairweather fault were revealed by light detection and ranging (lidar) and show evidence for transpressional deformation between North America and the Yakutat block in southeast Alaska. Over the last 100 years, the Queen Charlotte-Fairweather fault system has produced large-magnitude earthquakes affecting both Canada and the U.S. To fill in missing details about its offshore location and structure, USGS uses sophisticated techniques to truly understand the faults hazard potential. The North American Plate is made of continental crust, and the Pacific Plate is made of oceanic crust. The P nodal focal mechanism for the 1949 earthquake indicates a virtually pure strike-slip movement with a northwest-striking nodal plane corresponding to the strike of the fault. (Dehler, 3), Figure 8: This is the Preliminary Geological Map made by Sutherland Brown and W.D. 834 Lincoln Street Existing geophysical data suggest abrupt transitions in deformation mechanisms and plate boundary dynamics across these boundaries with incipient underthrusting and strain partitioning in the south along Haida Gwaii,[9] distributed transpression in the central segment,[8] and highly localized strike-slip deformation in the north. It is often referred to as the right lateral strike-slip equivalent to the San Andreas fault zone. [8] The Queen Charlotte Fault continues northward along the Alaskan coast where it is called the Fairweather Fault. She was a close friend of Queen Marie Antoinette. Portrait of King George III and Queen Charlotte of the United Kingdom. Based on information provided in Module 4.5, this ''area'' (Northern BC) is no longer in a seismic gap zone. The variability in the surficial and deep structures along the length of the margin is great and corresponds well with the postulated variations in the local ocean/continent motion vectors: motion along the southern Queen Charlotte Islands margin is primarily transform (about 55 mm/year) with a small component of convergence (about 10 mm/year); motion south of the triple junction at the Wilson Knolls is convergent but at a very slow rate (about 10 mm/year); and motion along the central and southern Vancouver Island margin is nearly orthogonal to the coast and more rapid (about 40 mm/year). According to A.Sutherland Browns article Geology of the Queen Charlotte Islands, folds with low intensity are observable near the junction of the Pacific and North America plates. Major deep-sea fans alongmore southeast Alaska show a southeastward age progression from older to younger and record both point source deposition at Chatham Strait and Dixon Entrance and subsequent (Quaternary ) offset along the fault system. Along the Fairweather-Queen Charlotte transform margin south of Cross Sound short, chute-like canyons cross the slope to submarine-fan channels. Possible hydrocarbon traps include folds, rollover anticlines, basement fault blocks, and a variety of combined structural-stratigraphic traps. Subduction Zone: A region where the earth's plates collide, with one plate sliding beneath the other. The pair remained married for nearly 60 years. Sitka I thank you for your great work, very interesting. Also, the Queen Charlotte-Fairweather fault system is the region known as the junction of Queen Charlottes Fault and the Fairweather fault along the Alaskan coast. Official websites use .gov Epicenters were located near the Queen Charlotte-Fairweather fault and the Denali fault. From north to south, there is a decreasing rate of convergence[8] and change in fault obliquity which appears to divide the fault into at least three distinct kinematic zones [2] along strike with associated changes in seafloor morphology, fault structure, and seismicity. In Browns article, they are compared to wraped panels of volcanic rock. Brub, J., G. C. Rogers, R. M. Ellis, and F. O. Hasselgren (1989). These oldest folds have wavelengths of 10-16 miles with amplitudes of 2-3 miles (, (Brown Bulletin 54, 156)The folds observed in all these rocks are all gentle (interlimb angle of 120-180 degrees). Create your own unique website with customizable templates. The Mukluk and Horizon channels start along southeast Alaska and end 1,000 km away on the Tufts abyssal plain. By Katie Sewell 10:16, Tue, Apr 19, 2022 | UPDATED: 10:16, Tue, Apr 19, 2022 [4] It sustains the highest known deformation rates among continental or continent-ocean transform systems globally, accommodating greater than 50mm/yr dextral offset. You see, George wasn't looking for a political equal. In 1764, an eight-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart arrived in Great Britain with his family, as part of their grand tour of Europe. A subduction zone occurs at plate margins, when the plates converge and one of the plates is plunging under the other one. Though the two never actually me, they corresponded frequently. According to the UK Royals' website, the "Queen's music-master was Johann Christian Bach, who was the eleventh son of the great composer Johann Sebastian Bach. St. James Palace was the official residence of the royal couple, but the King purchased a nearby property, Buckingham House (expanded to Buckingham Palace in the 19th century) as a private retreat for his wife. . Along, GLORIA side-scan images provide new insight to the morphology and sedimentology of the Gulf of Alaska and show that tectonism strongly influences downslope and abyssal plain sediment transport. Write something about yourself. EXPRESS data and information are intended to guide wise use of living marine resources and habitats, inform ocean energy and mineral resource decisions, and improve offshore hazard assessments. Alas, it never came to be. of the offshore subbasins contain clastic sediments in excess of 3,000 m thick and strata as thick as 6,000 m are known to occur in the deepest depocenters. Charlotte, North Carolina Later, Mozart would dedicate his Opus 3 piece to the Queen. Geologic hazards not necessarily related to earthquakes include (1) occasional . San Andreas, Alpine) in terms of slip rates and seismogenic potential. The fault steps westward at Tuzo Wilson Knolls, which are likely part of a spreading ridge segment. The red arrows illustrate the resulting plates movement. Dear Mrs. Meryem Berrada, magnitude 8.1 Queen Charlotte Islands earthquake of August 22, 1949, 2. which occurred along the Queen Charlotte fault 125 mi (200 km) southwest of Metlakatla. We're working to build upon Sitkas legacy as a research and educational community. This illustrations displays the folds observed in different aged rocks, the observable aticlines and synclines and the plunge and trend of the folds, on a scale of 14 miles. Picture provided by Google Earth application. Our vision is to build on and expand Sitkas legacy and potential as an educational and scientific community. More than three-quarters of the states population live in an area that can experience a magnitude 7 earthquake. Although most of the plate motion isaccommodated by the right-lateral Queen CharlotteFairweather Fault (QCFF) System, which has produced at least six M>7 earthquakes since 1920, The neotectonics of southern Alaska (USA) are characterized by a several hundred kilometerswide zone of dextral transpressional that spans the Alaska Range. Offering logistical and field support isnt the Science Centers only role, we also work hard to bring this work to our middle and high school classes through developing age appropriate lessons and hosting evening presentations geared towards lifelong learners. Though born in Germany and a princess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Charlotte was directly descended from an African branch of the Portuguese Royal House. [2] Accommodation of strike-slip plate motion along a narrow deformation zone is consistent with focal mechanisms determined for the Craig event and its aftershocks. To the north, three turbidite systems drain the margin. Meghan Markle in March 2018. Jeffery in 1958-59. Neotectonics of interior Alaska and the late Quaternary slip rate along the Denali fault system, Sculpted by water, elevated by earthquakesThe coastal landscape of Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska, Eastern Denali Fault surface trace map, eastern Alaska and Yukon, Canada. Figure 4: Combination of reverse and strike-slip faulting. The Queen Charlotte fault is the offshore portion of the Queen Charlotte-Fairweather Fault, In 2015, U.S. Geological Survey scientists in collaboration with scientists from other institutions began a study of the Queen Charlotte faultthe first systematic study of the fault in more than three decades. The 2016 research expeditions used Lidar and trenching to gather data on the Fairweather fault, the terrestrial portion of this tectonic system in the nearly roadless Glacier Bay National Park in southeast Alaska. The, A regional survey of the western Canadian continental margin from the central Queen Charlotte Island, 52/sup 0/40'N, to the Strait of Juan de Fuca, 47/sup 0/40'N, has been completed with the acoustic imaging system SeaMARC II. The current state of transpressive plate boundary systems results from spatial and temporal changes between both rheologic and kinematic parameters. Recently Updated The second quake, just 200 miles to the north, generated a magnitude 7.5 event offshore of Craig, Alaska, rupturing a 70-mile long stretch of the fault. There is a continuous transition from very high deep sea heat flow, through intermediate values on the terrace, to low continental heat flow. Previous models for the accommodation of transpression include internal deformation of both plates adjacent to the plate boundary or oblique subduction of the oceanic plate; the latter has The basin formed during Eocene to Pliocene extension along and adjacent to a transform segment of the Pacific-North American plate boundary. Specifically, these investigations include (1) acquisition and interpretation of remotely sensed topographic data, including lidar, satellite imagery and legacy aerial photography; (2) mapping of tectonic geomorphology and active traces of the southern Fairweather Fault; and (3) investigation of earthquake recurrence intervals, slip-per-earthquake, and style of deformation through field investigations that include paleoseismic trenching where practicable. Geo-Marine Letters 33, 311318. Woods Hole, MA 02543 Clearly evident in the imagery are the deformation of sediments at the base of the slope, the surface expression of seismically active faults, the mass wasting of sediment frequently observed at the base of the slope, and the erosional, The Queen Charlotte basin is a 40,000 km{sup 2} late Paleogene-Neogene basin underlying the Queen Charlotte Islands, Hecate Strait, and Queen Charlotte Sound region of the Canadian Pacific continental margin. After George descended into permanent madness in 1811, the Prince was declared Regent. In Alaska, digital elevation models based on light detection and ranging and interferometric synthetic aperture radar data enabled our fault mapping at scales of 1:2,000 and 1:10, 12201 Sunrise Valley Drive Reston, VA 20192, Region 2: South Atlantic-Gulf (Includes Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands), Region 12: Pacific Islands (American Samoa, Hawaii, Guam, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands), A bathymetric terrain model of multibeam sonar data collected between 2005 and 2018 along the Queen Charlotte Fault System in the Eastern Gulf of Alaska from Cross Sound, Alaska to Queen Charlotte Sound, Canada, Coastal and Marine Hazards and Resources Program, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center, Multibeam bathymetry and acoustic-backscatter data collected in 2017 and 2018 of Noyes Submarine Canyon and vicinity, southeast Alaska, Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center, Multibeam bathymetry and acoustic-backscatter data collected in 2015 near Cross Sound, southeast Alaska, during field activity 2015-629-FA, Radiocarbon Data for Fairweather Fault Investigation, Glacier Bay National Park, Southeast Alaska (2021), Multibeam bathymetry and backscatter data collected in the eastern Gulf of Alaska during USGS Field Activity 2016-625-FA using a Reson 7160 multibeam echosounder, Systematic mapping of the ocean-continent transform plate boundary of the Queen Charlotte fault system, southeastern Alaska and western British ColumbiaA preliminary bathymetric terrain model, Geomorphic expression and slip rate of the Fairweather fault, southeast Alaska, and evidence for predecessors of the 1958 rupture, The Peters Hills basin, a Neogene wedge-top basin on the Broad Pass thrust fault, south-central Alaska, Groundwater and Streamflow Information Program. The goal of this research is to gain a better understanding of the Queen Charlotte-Fairweather Fault and its associated earthquake, tsunami, and underwater-landslide hazards. Anchorage, AK 99508 Between 2012 and 2014, renewed seismic events on the Queen Charlotte-Fairweather Fault system caused a series of moderate to large earthquakes, including the 2012 M7.8 Haida Gwaii earthquake, the 2013 M7.5 Craig earthquake and the 2014 M6.0 Palma Bay earthquake. The junction of the Queen Charlotte, Fairweather, and Transition faults is located at the southeastern tip of the Yakutat block, an oceanic plateau and microplate. On Sunday, 22 debutantes made their London society debut at Queen Charlotte's Ball. This magnitude 7.8 earthquake caused as much as 21 feet of horizontal movement and up to 3 feet of vertical movement and was felt as far south as Seattle, Washington. I dont think a prisoner could wish more ardently for his liberty than I wish to be rid of my burden and see the end of my campaign. Because earthquakes carry on right through international political boundaries, collecting offshore geological data and developing accurate hazard assessments for the U.S. and Canada required an internationalpartnership. The Queen Charlotte Fault forms a triple junction on its south with the Cascadia subduction zone and the Explorer Ridge (the Queen Charlotte Triple Junction ). Here, I use modeling to understand the plate kinematics and deformation associated with the Pacific-North America plate boundary, near the island of Haida Gwaii, to investigate the development of the Queen Charlotte Terrace, and its position within . It is observed that the folds in Triassic and Jurassic rocks are oriented west and northwest. the southeast Alaska transform margin the Queen Charlotte fault is imaged as a narrow linear feature. [5] Deformation largely occurs on what appears to be a single strike-slip structure. [4] This is similar to the 1970 earthquake, which also showed a strike-slip movement with a small but significant thrust component, consistent with relative plate motion. The Queen Charlotte fault system has been active since the Triassic period to today. The first was a magnitude 7.8 earthquake in 2012 offshore of Haida Gwaii,Canada, that initiated a tsunami that was detectable not only locally, but as far away as U.S. military installations in Hawaii. Ashley Elizabeth Fliehr, who is commonly known as Charlotte Flair, is one of the leading women of the Women's division in WWE. The blue plane illustrates the axial plane. The two faults create the boundary between the North America and Pacific tectonic plates. Sir Allan Ramsay is thought to have produced the most accurate representations. It is Canada's right-lateral strike-slip equivalent to the San Andreas Fault to the south in California. The world's largest earthquakes occur along this type of plate boundary. ; (United States). A team of USGS scientists spent 10 days in the wilderness, exploring one of the fastest-moving faults in America. Her royal subjects knew nothing about her racial background. The Queen Charlotte-Fairweather Fault extends more than 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) from offshore of Vancouver Island, Canada, to the Fairweather Range of southeast Alaska. In fact, the Queen Charlotte Fault ruptured twice in recent years, raising concern over its potential to damage coastal and seabed infrastructure through southeastern Alaska and western British Columbia. Strain partitioning in southeastern Alaska: Is the Chatham Strait Fault active? 10 am - 2 pm, WednesdaySaturday : Official websites use .gov The blue arrows illustrate the acting force. (Brown Preliminary Geological Map, 1), Figure 9: This illustration reveals the location of the different basins on the west coast of Canada, near Queen Charlotte's fault, that have the necessary conditions for gas and oil formation. These files provide the complete data release for the paper entitled, "Geomorphic expression and slip rate of the Fairweather fault, southeast Alaska, and evidence for predecessors of the 1958 rupture." Barbara Stepko is a New Jersey-based freelance editor and writer who has contributed to AARP magazine and the Wall Street Journal. [1] An official website of the United States government. These two plates move at a rate of~5cm yr 1 relative to each other [DeMets et al., 2010]. And he didn't do this out of ignorance, either. [7] The two segments are collectively called the Queen Charlotte-Fairweather Fault System. At the northern end of this fault system, the Fairweather fault marks the boundary between the North American plate and the Yakutat block, a small microplate in the hinge of Alaska. Cordially. Updated on October 10, 2018. Charlotte, original name Charlotte Sophia of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, (born May 19, 1744died November 17, 1818), queen consort of George III of England. In fact, there are places all over the world named in her honor from Queen Charlotte Sound in New Zealand, to Queen Charlotte Bay in West Falkland, to Charlottesville, Virginia. Assoc. Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (Sophia Charlotte; 19 May 1744 - 17 November 1818) was Queen of Great Britain and of Ireland as the wife of King George III from their marriage on 8 September 1761 until her death in 1818. [1][2] It is Canada's right-lateral strike-slip equivalent to the San Andreas Fault to the south in California. Between 2012 and 2014, renewed seismic events on the Queen Charlotte-Fairweather Fault system caused a series of moderate to large earthquakes, including the 2012 M7.8 Haida Gwaii earthquake, the 2013 M7.5 Craig earthquake and the 2014 M6.0 Palma Bay earthquake. Princess Sofia Charlotte was born May 19,1744, to Duke Charles Ludwig Friedrich of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and Princess Elisabeth Albertine of Saxe-Hildburghausen. [18] This hypothesis is also supported by the morphology of the Queen Charlotte Terrace, an approximately 30km-wide deformed accretionary prism-like complex west of the main QCF trace. Charlotte, meanwhile, became her husbands legal guardian, which placed her under a great deal of stress. On figure 1, we can see the west coast of Canada, the boundary with the United States of America and a small portion of Alaska. In subsequent research expeditions (two in 2016, one in summer 2017, and another in fall 2017), additional data were collected along the underwater Queen Charlotte Fault. The magnitude 7.8 Lituya Bay earthquake resulted from a 260-km long rupture of the Fairweather Fault in southeast Alaska, yet we know little about how often events of this size reoccur. Figure 5: This illustration represents a fold. The data set consists of radiocarbon dates analyzed at the National Ocean Sciences Accelerator Mass Spectrometry Facility. The current state of transpressive plate boundary systems results from spatial and temporal changes between both rheologic and kinematic parameters. [5] The same location also marks earthquake rupture boundaries between the 2013 Craig event[25] and the 1972 M7.6 Sitka event,[26][27] as well as the inferred intersection of the Chatham Strait Fault and the Aja Fracture Zone (FZ) with the Queen Charlotte Fault; the Aja FZ also marks an approximately 3 million year contrast in Pacific Plate crustal age. "Chapter Four: Structural Geology. [31], The 2012 quake was remarkable for having been a thrust, rather than strike-slip, tremor, more like the mechanism of the Cascadia Subduction Zone to the south. Tributary channels from Cross Sound to Alsek Valley form the Chirikov channel system which bends westward and ends in turbidite fans south of the Kodiak-Bowie Seamount chain. In 1765, King George became mentally ill. (Its now believed that he was suffering from porphyria, an inherited disorder stemming from the buildup of certain chemicals in the brain, but at the time the cause of his illness was unknown.). Although there are problems with biases in earthquake The two segments are collectively called the Queen Charlotte-Fairweather Fault System. A geological map of the southern Queen Charlottes islands from a study by Sutherlands A. Subsidence of ocean plate now adjacent to the Chatham Strait-Dixon Entrance fault segment initiated development of both Mukluk and Horizon Channels. Like the San Andreas fault, the Queen Charlotte-Fairweather Fault separates the Pacific tectonic plate from the North American plate. Secure .gov websites use HTTPS Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte's duties for the Coronation have been made public as George takes center stageOn May 6, King Charles will be crowned, and. Toward the end, as depicted in Bridgerton, Charlotte was deeply affected by King George's mental and physical illnesses. The Queen Charlotte Fault continues northward along the Alaskan coast where it is called the Fairweather Fault. 1 inset). It was discovered many years after her death by keen-eyed art historians. A 45-cm tsunami was reported locally. The Chatham Strait fault showed no activity, and only a few events were located in the Quaternary volcanic zone of British Columbia. The shaking of the ground near an earthquake source made up of potentially damaging seismic waves of various types. Since Queen Charlottes fault is located on the oceanic floor, all the observations mainly consist of submarine topography, record and analysis of seismic activity and its connection to the surrounding geological formations. The fault runs up the side of Haida Gwaii in British Columbia, and along the outer coast of Southeast Alaska all the way to Yakutat. ; (United States). She came into the world on May 19, 1744, as Sophia Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, a northern German territory that at the time was part of the Holy Roman Empire. This data publication is a compilation of six different multibeam surveys covering the previously unmapped Queen Charlotte Fault offshore southeast Alaska and Haida Gwaii, Canada. A team of geologists on a September expedition to map a major offshore earthquake fault north of Canada's Vancouver Island has discovered a surprising geologic feature deep beneath the waves: an. Our approach interrogates lidar data and satellite imagery, applies paleoseismological methods to examine earthquake history, and leverages partnerships with USGS scientists from Colorado and California, the National Park Service, NOAA, and the Army Corps of Engineers Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory. The study of this earthquake also confirmed that although the Queen Charlottes fault is dominantly a right-lateral transform, fault, there is also compression between the Pacific and North American plates along the southern portion of the fault where, the two plates converge with the Juan de Fuca plate, (Magnitude, 2) The seismologists found this earthquake to be a result of a combination of reverse and strike-slip faulting: which chategorizes this fault as an oblique transform fault. Not everyone has been a fan of the exclusive event Prince Philip reportedly once dubbed it "bloody daft." The two segments are collectively called the Queen Charlotte-Fairweather Fault System. Queen Charlotte fault (54N) delineate patterns of brittle faulting linked to transform development since 50 Ma. The Queen Charlotte fault became the western terminus of the glacio-isostatic forebulge, with the fault acting as a hinged flap taking up the uplift and collapse along the fault of 70+ m.
